The fog didn't hide the landscape. It made the moment
belong entirely to them.
There are mornings in the Azores when the mist simply
refuses to leave. On the day Kymberly and Dylan chose
to say their vows above the twin lakes of Sete Cidades,
the iconic Miradouro do Túnel had disappeared behind a
quiet veil of fog. For many, it might have felt like
something was missing. For me, it felt like everything
was exactly as it should be.
Kymberly's connection to the Azores runs deeper than
geography. Born in Canada, she carries her heritage with
quiet pride — the Portuguese flag tattooed on her arm is
not decoration. It is a map. This July 2024 elopement on
São Miguel island was, in the truest sense, a homecoming.
My work lives somewhere between documentary storytelling
and fine art composition. Not fully directed, but never
accidental. The overcast light of a July morning above
Sete Cidades is one of the best-kept secrets in Azores
wedding photography — clouds become a natural softbox,
light wraps around faces evenly, colours read true.
Instead of chasing the perfect view, we leaned into what
the day was offering — the gesture, the movement, the
twenty or so family members who had travelled to stand
on that hilltop together.
That is where the real images happen.
The ceremony unfolded entirely outdoors, with the
Atlantic fog as their witness. Kymberly and Dylan brought
exactly the energy the day called for — relaxed, present,
and completely themselves. The bridesmaids carried
bouquets of blue hydrangeas, one of the most iconic
flowers of the Azores, while Kymberly held a stunning
arrangement of cream roses and pampas grass. There was
cold sparkling wine passed around, spontaneous dancing,
and a family that had clearly come ready to celebrate.
Two moments stood out above the rest: the exchange of
rings, quiet and unhurried, and the dances with their
parents — the kind of moment that needs no direction,
only presence. Everyone was happy. Genuinely, completely
happy. And that, in the end, is what the photographs
are made of.
The day was brought together by Maria C. Vieira of
Ambiance Wedding Azores, who also officiated the
ceremony. Video by Line Up Productions, Azores.
I'm Filipe Peixoto, and I've been documenting love
stories on these islands since 2008. As a fine art and
destination wedding photographer based in the Azores,
my approach is adaptive and cinematic — I work with
whatever the islands offer, from golden light to
Atlantic fog, and I travel worldwide for couples who
want their story told with honesty and intention.
If this way of seeing resonates with you, I take on
a limited number of elopements each year to keep every
story personal and fully present. I'd love to hear
yours — weddinginazores.com/contact
